Registered Agent

What is it?

A registered agent (RA) is the legal representative designated by a business entity to receive formal documents and legal correspondence on behalf of a business. The registered agent will receive, organize, and deliver business documents so that a business owner does not miss any important items.

Should I hire a registered agent?

Yes. A business is required to designate a registered agent, and registered agents are required to fulfill certain duties. While you can act as your own registered agent, third party registered agent services are always available at a physical address during business hours, which relieves a business owner of this duty. P.O. boxes do not qualify as physical addresses for the purposes of a business’s registered agent.

How to file?

When adding a Registered Agent during the incorporation process, this will also register you for your registered agent. Once registered, from this point, the state registered agent will receive official documents on your company’s behalf and upload them onto your GoSmallBiz profile to review. To view these documents:

  1. Log in to your GoSmallBiz account.
  2. Click into “My Products/Services.”
  3. Find the table, “My Documents,” that will display the received documents.
